alex

I have not updated this blog in a long time.  Alex is doing well. She has been in treatment for a year now and in remission for a year! Her team of Dr.’s and Nurses at Albany med are wonderful they have gotten us through this past year.  Alex has about a year and a half  to go with her treatment. She is in the long term maintanance, this includes 4 Methotrexate pills on Monday’s, 1 Mercapatourine a night, 5 days of a steroid called dex, she also gets vincristine and pentamadine once a month, and every 3 monts a spinal tap. The spinal taps seem to cause her some discomfort for a couple of days after. Everything else she seems to handle pretty good. Alex is a fighter and continues to do well. Keep praying for her!

Alex’s Benefit

Posted by: teamalex on: August 12, 2008

Alex’s Benefit was a huge success. We had a great time. It is amazing the ammount of support we are receiving from friends, people in the community and total strangers. The emotions that come along with something like this are overwhelming.  Thank-you’s feel like they are just not enough.

Because of all the support for Alex, we will be able to get her to Albany for her treatments. I will also be able to be her main care giver through her most tough treatments. Everyone has helped so much.  I did not expect this diagnosis Alex was so healthy as a baby. Diagnosis was a scary time for us, through all the support, love and prayers we are getting through this one day at a time.

To everyone that worked so hard on Alex’s benefit each and everyone one of you is recognized we thank you all so much. To all who came or have showed support in other ways. Thank you so much. Without people to lift us up in times of need, Alex would not being doing as good as she is.It is taking a HUGE TEAM to help Alex beat her Leukemia!

When Alex came home from the hospital, we were put in touch with many resources . We signed her up for chemo Angel’s.

Chemo Angels is a volunteer organization dedicated to adding a ray of sunshine to the lives of those undergoing IV chemo treatment.”

Alex has her own very special Angels Ellen and Kim, they send the most fun things for Alex to do and see. We love and appreciate them so much. I feel they have become such an extended part of our family. They have helped Alex have brighter days when things were rough.

“Walk for a Princess” to help little girl with cancer

(Fort Plain) – A fundraiser, “Walk for a Princess,” will be held on Sunday, June 8 in Fort Plain for three-year old Alexandra Handy, who has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Little Alex, who was diagnosed last fall, lives in Fort Plain with her parents and two sisters. Her mother lost her job due to the time she was spending taking care of her sick daughter. The family is now faced with medical bills and other expenses, including the cost of gas needed for the twice-weekly drive to Albany Medical Center.

The fundraiser will take place from 3-8 p.m. at the Harry Hoag School sports complex and will include a Memory Walk. Groups can sign up and obtain pledges to walk the track for Alex. Pledge sheets are available at the Harry Hoag School and at Kirkpatrick Law Office on Canal Street. Luminaries, which will light the track after dark, can be purchased in memory of someone who has died of cancer or in honor of someone who has survived.

The event will also feature a Chinese auction with items such as tickets to events, celebrity-autographed sports memorabilia and many items too numerous to mention. Concessions will be available including hot dogs, hamburgers and a bake sale. T-shirts, which will read “Walk for a Princess,” will also be for sale.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Handy family to cover costs associated with Alex’s care and treatment.

The princess reference comes from Alex’s love of princesses. According to her older sister Megan, Alex likes to dress up as one at home.

For more information, or to get involved, contact Kris Kirkpatrick or Lori Fredericks at the school, or Ann Jenks at the law office at 993-4341.

Why

Posted by: teamalex on: May 17, 2008

We have created this site to raise awareness of all the wonderful foundations and supoort that is available to children with cancer and their families. So many people have touched our lives. We want to give back in any way we can. We have decided as a family that we will thank each that helped us individually and also ask for the publics help, in our quest. In return this will raise much awareness and this site may become a valuable resource to those who are dealing with a childhood illness or disease.
